Phase 2: Idea Formation
& Heuristic Exploration

In this phase, we explored and created 3 preliminary design studies. Using Peter Rowe's heuristics as our foundation for our strategic placement and reasoning, we identified many different ways to solve this design problem. Our reasoning process consisted of three steps: Condition, Action, and Intent, which we used to justify our design choices in each of these studies.

Preliminary Design 1:
Environmental Relation

Orientation of units following angle of the south sun. Emphasis on light play and maximization of southern exposure.

Preliminary Design 2:
Formal Language

Deconstruction of Meier's formal language by using a different geometric language; Use of Golden Ratio (1.618:1) rather than two equilateral squares (2:1).

Preliminary Design 3:
Typology

Inspiration from Crespi D'adda's idea of paternal hierarchy and gridded layout. Use of geometric complexity to express hierarchal importance.
